"I'm the spirit of youth and joy, remember?"
"You're a grown man and a nuisance."
“I’m your nuisance.”

Peter Pan retelling? Transgender main character? Peter and Hook romance? Woah…

Honestly, my feelings are so mixed on this one. It unpacks so many important real life issues and intriguing aspects of Neverland/the original characters, yet is only ~300 pages.

I saw someone say it feels like the beginning and the end of a 5⭐ read and I think that sums it up perfectly. I really wish it was longer , I feel slightly unsatisfied with the world building and romance, yet the writing, the style, and the depth was still incredible.

I’d still 100% recommend it to others since it is a short yet fascinating read, I just really wish there was more of a middle and fleshed out storyline.

How do I unread this and go back to the happy person I was before this volume...?

I have aggressively mixed feelings on this.

I have been trying for months to figure out if these are more positive or negative and have been unsuccessful.. so I might admit defeat and just leave it at that.

Had this due to a deal on audible... did not realise it was the fourth book in a series... thus had no idea what was going on...

BUT

I ended up listening to the whole thing on a sleepless night, and it was better than I expected it to be- for a book(+author) I'd never heard of (with one of *those* covers...) and a plot I was out of the loop for- so honestly I was pleasantly surprised and glad I had it that night.

Overall, I can definitely understand the hype around this book- but I do think this set my expectations far too high, therefore affecting my reading experience. That being said, it was still 100% a really enjoyable world to get immersed in.

Summary of my thoughts:

Rating = somewhere between a 3.5 and 4

Favourite quote = “She imagined loving him would feel like falling in love with darkness, frightening and consuming yet utterly beautiful when the stars came out.”

Positives
-The setting is immaculate
-Interesting set up for the romance
-Concept of the games
-Intriguing side characters
-Writing style

Negatives
-Tella
-Wanted to know (and see) more about the games and previous ones
-Tella again
-Scarlet's really 'difficult' decision... iykyk
-Very seriously Tella, like what actually goes on in that head
-Sometimes I genuinely didn't understand some of Scarlet's thoughts/decisions/reactions (but that might just be me comparing to how I'd maybe think/act)
