Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

The writing style was what really had me hooked here. Honestly, am not sure how to explain it, but the mix of perspectives, point of views, and second/third person was immaculate.

This isn't the kind of read I would usually go for so I went in with mediocre hopes- that were completely disregarded after the first couple chapters. The characters are all so perfectly flawed yet loveable, the concept was wild yet intriguing, the themes were comforting yet dark; everything was just such a perfect contradiction of itself.

It is hard to really summarise who would enjoy this book, or what this book is even about, but honestly just check it out for yourself because it really does keep you intrigued.

“when your mother is your first heartbreak, no love will ever fill the void of feeling so unloved by her.”

Just wow.

As much as I understand the people complaining that nothing happened, I also really do not.

Sure, nothing political or world-changing occurred, but there was so much character growth, insight, and relationship advances. Reckless was always going to suffer from middle-book-syndrome, and I feel like Lauren embraced that. A lot, and I mean a lot (that ending...), has been set up for the next book, and necessary characters have been given more depth/presence.

Also, if you like Pae x Kai I cannot accept any complaints. I was kicking my feet and squealing even more than in Powerless. Lauren could write four more books of nothing but those two being together and I would eat it up.

Similarly, I would also like to come out as an absolute Lenny simp. I want a whole 3-book-spin-off surrounding everything he does off-page.

!!Controversial opinion time!!
I love Kitt. Not as a person... but as a plot device and a character... Someone get this man a therapist and an original opinion asap... but also I am so intrigued by his gradual loss of self/humanity.

On that note...
Spoiler I am so incredibly intrigued to understand more of Calum's role in everything. Who's side is he really on? What is he hoping to achieve? Where did he come from?

Quote Section:
-“I’m tired of writing from the villain’s perspective.” Okay angst.
-“And then she smiles, bright and big like the night sky hanging above us. I fear she could rival the stars.” Had me screaming
-"So, if even a sliver of your soul longs for mine, I'll spend the rest of my life trying to deserve it.” You already do bby :')
-
Spoiler"She was supposed to be my forever. Now I'll watch her become someone else's. Because the beast doesn't get the beauty.”
I fully stopped breathing while reading this.
-“I think I would fall on my sword if it meant you mourned me,” he breathes. “And it’s terrifying to think you hold that much power over me.” Kai is the new (maybe unhealthy) standard
-"But I know I’ll regret what I have to do to you for the rest of my life.” Ominous...
-“Who would have thought I’d be capable of such cruelty, such crippling sadness? Maybe Father would like this version of me.” This had me reeling. Oh Kitt.
-“I wasn’t Kai, and it killed him.” Kittttttt
-“Now here I stand, a mosaic of a man—all sharp edges and shattered pieces.” *cries*
-“Hate me enough to use me.” Stop it, I love these two

That ending brought it up to 4⭐️s because... wHaT dO yoU mEaN???

~

This felt originally like it was focused too much on shock factor to be that likeable, but then it does start getting a bit more plot-heavy halfway through (where Zade also crops up). Then the ending happens... That alone sold me on this series more than anything. It was so interesting to start noticing all the hints I had been blatantly ignoring the whole book haha. Also, who doesn't love an absolutely unhinged stabby vigilante queen?
