Long Story Short by Serena Kaylor

Gosh okay, where do I start. I was extremely excited to read this because I’m a theater kid, that was in a theater summer camp when I started this book, and I’ve been homeschooled before, like the main character. Unsurprisingly, this did not live up to my expectations.
Firstly, the main character made me wish I was dead. Like, most main characters annoy me at least a little but GOD I just wanna rip out Beatrice’s hair and force feed it to her with boiling oil to wash it down. She was one of the HUGEST “I’m not like other girls and i will remind you of it every single goddamn sentence” stereotypes that I’ve ever seen.
The romance was also very yuck, like I didn’t care much for the guy, and his nickname for her “mouse” made my insides shrivel up and crawl out of my body. I liked the setting and theatre vibe because that’s what I live for but I would not recommend this book. Sorry if the author sees this, I feel bad, but this just really really wasn’t my cup of tea.
P.S. how does this book have such good reviews ?? what is wrong with humanity (/hj) ?????

It was alright and the idea is very interesting but I was only reading it to prepare (extremely in advance) for play auditions anyway. ily toad <333

I LOVE an “oh so put together and organized but secretly messy” main character and lovvvvve the ocd rep. And the main relationship was pretty cute

I thought for sure that Menelaus was going to be gay, and also I wish the plot was less entirely about sex, all of the book, besides the first and last few chapters, is about sex. However, I really really enjoyed this retelling, I’m a sucker for Greek historical fiction and I really like the feminist take on it!!

I read this in a day and it was so good, I really liked how unique the whole story is and I was especially fond of the characters rules and how her magic spells work, I think as someone with ocd it made me feel less alone about my own rules :)
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Not gonna lie, I hate the whole “omg what do you mean I’m so pretty that every male being in the world loved me and says how sexy I am, you must be mistaken” thing and the beginning of the book was slow but it’s an interesting concept and the characters are all right, I’ll continue the series
The Borrowers Avenged by Mary Norton
I read something that made me think Arrietty and Spiller’s relationship would be resolved and I’m strangely upset that it wasn’t. I really thought that Arrietty would choose Spiller, like i was so sure and im frustrated that didn’t happen. I dont know…Usually I’m all for independent main characters but…so many things were hinted at and never came to anything. It made me really sad and I would be lying if I said I didn’t cry a little at the end.
The Borrowers Aloft: Plus the Short Tale Poor Stainless by Mary Norton
I’m taking notes from these because I’m playing Arrietty in a stage production and when she said she wanted to marry Spiller I literally almost died I was like WHAT[€~+,%]+[!,*>~*{+]£bIwifxohq
