I won this advance copy of Goodreads Giveaways, which was great! I enjoyed this book for the reasons I like all of Kay's work - his characters are interesting and empathetic and navigate a world that is both familiar and fantastic. This book is set in the same alternate world that he has used in previous works that feature three great religions that are reminiscent of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This work makes use of Kay's strengths - depicting characters from diverse religions and regions navigating interactions with the unfamiliar people and cultures into which they are thrust by the events of the narrative. He is also great at using fantastical elements judiciously but to great effect (The relationship of Danica and her grandfather being one of the best features of this book). The difference in this novel is that Kay does not focus on a single region or culture as exclusively as for example "Sailing to Sarantium" or "The Lions of Al Rassan." This narrative is much more about the interactions of multiple cultures and peoples in border regions that are in flux. I wouldn't rank this book at the very top of Kay's work, but very good Kay is better than most- this book still demonstrates that Kay is the master of historical fantasy (or whatever you want to call this genre that Kay has created that exists perfectly suspended between historical fiction and fantasy).
