Like all of Kristin Hannah’s work that I have read, this book is unrelentingly depressing. Usually her writing is a bit too depressing for my taste, but this one I loved. The setting is interesting and the set of characters intriguing. The sense of intense loneliness is remedied with a feeling of hope in the few friends that we meet. That being said, however, the book has one huge flaw that is hard to overlook. The story should have ended when the main antagonist is no longer a threat. From that point on it drags. The story is essentially over as there is no antagonist blocking the protagonist’s goals. This is basic storytelling and would have made for a much neater ending to wrap up the story in just a couple chapters after that point. Alas, Hannah unnecessarily stretches out the story to wrap it up and put a neat little bow on it. A more ambiguous ending would have been much better in my opinion.
