"There was a shadowy unreal Ursula, a whole shadow-play of an unreal life. It was as unreal, and circumscribed, as a magic-lantern show. She wished the slides could all be broken. She wished it could be gone for ever, like a lantern-slide which was broken. She wanted to have no past. She wanted to have come down from the slopes of heaven to this place, with Birkin, not to have toiled out of the murk of her childhood and her upbringing, slowly, all soiled. She felt that memory was a dirty trick played upon her. What was this decree, that she should 'remember'! Why not a bath of pure oblivion, a new birth, without any recollections or blemish of a past life."

"Her life at this time was unformed, palpitating, essentially shrinking from all touch. She gave something to other people, but she was never herself, since she had no self. She was not afraid nor ashamed before trees, and birds, and the sky. But she shrank violently from people, ashamed she was not as they were, fixed, emphatic, but a wavering, undefined sensibility only, without form or being."

"I know how it is to live your life like a dream. To listen and watch, to wake up and try to understand what has already happened."

"that we can enter a body through its many
mouths but we cannot stay, there is no staying, to be a woman and to desire
with elegance has been for me impossible, to be a girl stumbling upon desire
like a rock along the footpath meant falling clumsily and breaking like a mirror,"

"She knew it was wonderful. And yet, till he had seen it, she felt it had not come into her soul. Only he could make it her own, immortal… Almost passionately she wanted to be with him when he stood before the flowers. They were going to have a communion together—something that thrilled her, something holy."
There wasn't any porn in this one, I guess that comes later in his oeuvre 😭 Really good though, the characters are so vivid... would transitioning have saved dh lawrence?

"And a cold fury rose within me towards Mei Li, who for all the fear and respect she had commanded from me over the years, I now realised was an impostor: someone not in the least capable of controlling this bewildering world that was unfolding all around me; a pathetic little woman who had built herself up in my eyes entirely on false pretences, who counted for nothing when the great forces clashed and battled. I stood in the doorway and stared at her with the utmost contempt."

Freud was so cool for being like "hegelian dialectics suck" while also not understanding them. This book is v comprehensive! It's a little tricky to keep track of all the names (both Freud's relatives and other psychoanalysts), so maybe take brief notes about who's who (I should've done that rip.)
"It was destiny’s role to enforce this repetition; it was Sōsuke’s lot to dodge the consequences."

"He was a man so attached to life that he could scarcely bear to picture his heart calmly beating to the coursing of his blood."

"We believe we are free, and that God will forgive us. Personally I think otherwise. Finally, transformed into tiny quivering photons, each of our deeds will set off into Outer Space, where the planets will keep watching it like a film until the end of the world."
