Coraline by Neil Gaiman
5.0
I first read this book soon after it was initially published as a grade school book project. It both enthralled and terrified me then, and now all these years later it still managed to do the same. At its core, Coraline is a modern day fairy tale (as are many of Gaiman's works) of a girl finding another world and interacting with her "other" mother, and her realization that everything in the seemingly perfect other world isn't all that it seems. Like many of Gaiman's other works, the atmosphere and prose are just as important to the experience of reading as the narrative itself. The book maintains an eerie tone throughout but never becomes anything that is truly horrific.
Also worth noting that the illustrations are absolutely fantastic. If you end up picking up the audiobook version of the novel, it's still well worth your time to look over the illustrations whenever you get the chance.
