There is no writer whose words I have yet encountered that comes anywhere near as skillful and gifted in the realm of writing in unison with nature. Bessie Head takes these forces and elements of surroundings, of the earth and beautifully merges them in with the plot, the characters and their ideals. Her writing is one with nature. A gift.

Unique style of writing poetry. Exciting to read. Fresh voice reinforcing many social ills that we been knew about. The writing is in-your-face with no sugar coating for any audience. Loud, proud and rooted in Queerness, Blackness, and Hoeness. Surface to say: I LOVED EACH AND EVERY POEM! A much needed refreshing read that exceeded my expectations when I excitedly grabbed it from the bookstore shelf. One of the greatest decisions I've made in a while.

Reading Queenie was existing in pure frustration for the protagonist while simultaneously rooting for her break through. Our good sis, Queenie, put your girl through A LOT while reading. I have a love-hate relationship with the characters and this book but it's mostly love and that's why I rated it a good 4.5, and it's definitely worth a re-read.
