3/4 of the book is a fun, silly, pure fluff romp with some trappings of historical romance (without being remotely historically accurate in any way), at the 3/4 mark though there is a deeply unpleasant rape scene.

This would have been my 68th book of 2010 but I am finding it slower than cold treacle to read. It is not my favourite Iain M Banks. I am trying to read his stuff in publication order and have a long way to go, this one won't put me off.
