House of Beating Wings - Olivia Wildenstein
Alright- let's get right in.
I picked up the two books in this series straight off the shelf- no recs.
Cover is beautiful, loved it, eye catching.
Now the premise of this book really got me hyped up.
I love a gal who has a deep passion for animals, and of course the promise of a crow shifting shadow daddy has me moving this to the straight top of my TBR. I started it That. Night.
My most major con with this book, bluntly:
The way the names were written, depending on perspective.
I auto doubled all the characters before I realized wtf was going on.
Olivia did a wonderful job world building and creating an environment that had me all in. Then it kept going.. and going.. and going..
With very little character development.
And very little store progression.
Pacing.
Pacing really fell flat fast for me in this book. I feel like I spent chapter after chapter waiting for things to really start picking up and it all sat at a lukewarm temp until the very end.
I found myself waiting for this book to be over just so I could speed to the next, under the assumption book 1 was a long winded world build?
At first I really appreciated the naivety of Fallon as an FMC considering the age difference amongst her peers and environment, honestly I was very into it. The "I'll do it for love" was almost.. charming? Albeit wildly preposterous in a very "I see this nonesense in teenagers, its just a phase, you'll outgrow this" kinda way- which again, was fitting due to the age gap. As the story progressed, however- I didn't see her evolve or grow in any way that would have made up for complete lack of logical thinking and survival skills.
Also also, using such modern terms brought me out of the story.
Funny? Yes. But they seemed soo out of place that the first time I noticed it, I was questioning the timeline altogether.
Lore is perfection, don't @ me, idc.
I feel like giving this less than 3☆s is an injustice, while also simultaneously feeling like I'm being generous.
Am I envious of Fallons friend group? Yes.
Will I carry in through the series to see what happens? Yes.
Does the second book get better? See my review.

Bex Dawn is out here really doing it again.
Crash and Burn got me soo in my feels!
The way Bex writes trauma is so raw and real. The emotions are so well written my heart is racing alongside the FMC and I cannot put the book down.
The FMC, Isabella is so strong a resilient. And the mystery of the whole plot has me hangin on by a thread. I want to consume this series.
The slow burn of is delicious and I love and adore it.
Longer review to come- I've got to dive in to the next book asap, cause that cliffhanger?! Babe. Bye

I will probably come back to finish this- because I hate dnf'ing books. For now, I just don't care enough about it to see it through. The characters are falling so flat for me. But the book is so pretty 🥺

I adored this book. I got it on a whim and pushed it up my TBR when I was feeling particularly down in the dumps. This book had me chuckling and kickin' my feet in no time. Straight into the plot, Likeable characters, easy to follow, hella spice. This is the recipe for an awesome comfort, cozy pick-me-up. Loved it.
