I hate Naoya they should’ve had Maki and Mai on the cover instead 😭

Maki is so girlboss. She didn’t need to touch grass she just needed to singlehandedly eradicate all the male members of her family /j

β€œWe leave, we leave, we leave. We always leave. It is in our blood to leave. But perhaps it’s also in our blood to return” (pg. 137)

Synopsis: A collection of short stories and think pieces of what it’s like growing up as women of color from the dregs of Queens, New York.

likes:
- pacing -- quick read
- representation: there is no one specific race/ethnicity that was prominent in this book since it was narrated as if it was a consensus of all types of women of color -- i thought it was a cool concept. the author also perfectly portrayed the guilt WOC feel when they leave their homes and childhood friends behind to pursue a degree, which is something i resonate deeply with

dislikes:
- i wish the chapters were much longer, but i think this is a great piece of literature to start with then delving into the topic of race, diversity, and inclusivity (i would LOVE to see this being taught in schools!!)

comments:
i wanted to hate this book at first b/c i thought it was going to be a rupi kaur-esque (idc for rupi kaur) x house on mango street type of book, but it’s not like that at all!

β€œI realise I’m collecting a tribe. The people I feel safest with are those who live alone in the world...” (pg. 166)

Synopsis: After leaving America and her failing marriage, Grace has returned to India to cremate her mother. Her mother leaves her with a house on the beach, and an older sister, Lucy, who she never knew she had. Grace adjusts to her new life in India with Lucy all while finding answers to why their parents fabricated her upbringing.

Likes
 • representation: MC is half Indian (Tamil Nadu) half Italian, side character with Down syndrome
 • writing style β€” easy to read
 • MC is an ACTUAL complex character. she is not a saint but she is not evil either
 • author kept a consistent theme
 • parallelism between MC's past and present life

Dislikes:
 • the racial slurs in this book were in Italian... and my jaw dropped when I looked up the translations
 • the dad β€” if he has no haters I'm dead

Comments:
this book has me thinking about what my siblings and I will inherit when we’re old af. lowkey wish I had a plot of land back home that I can retire to when I'm sick and tired of being a slave to capitalism
