I can't speak to the historical accuracy here as I am not well educated about the Irish immigrations or the potato famine, but it is an enjoyable read and introduces good reflection topics for children

the setting and atmosphere were very immersive and well written but the difficulties that these girls went through was very romanticized and unrealistic, and the relationship was creepy and gross while trying very very hard not to seem creepy and gross. the attitude towards canadas indigenous populations is reflective of the time period, but stereotyped beyond belief. if reading this book with your children, I would suggest first talking with them about the actual attitudes towards indigenous populations in canada, and how those attitudes reflect in the way that they are written about and represented in a misinforming manner here and in other children's stories.

well written for its audience, and interesting side plots addressing topics not usually found in dear canada books. i loved the way that both disability and adoption were addressed here, keeping in mind the time period and the attitudes towards these things. felt like a good portrayal for children to begin to question some aspects of life for marginalized communities while still having the main plot be the point of revolution.
