A crap ton of political drama, a  small amount of romance, and an even smaller amount of action. Don’t get me wrong. The world in this series is intricate and intriguing, but there was too much talk and build up and not enough climax over the entire series. I was waiting for a war to happen and cause a bonfire of chaos but in the end, there was only a fizzle. Also, some of the side characters became caricatures of their world instead of developing into something more. Here’s looking at you Okoa Carrion Crow. You deserved better. (I understand the reason for what happened and the theme in played into, but still…my poor dude was used and abused.) Serapio and Xiala’s love story is still the main reason to read this series…actually, it may take a back seat to Xiala herself.

Hear me out! They need to add emoji options for these book reviews. My reaction emojis to this book? It’s a little 🤷🏾‍♀️ mixed with 😑.

The story had a little too many twists making it hard to follow. The pacing was nice, and the characters were distinct. However, none of them really stood out.

Also, the one big problem I have with this book is that it’s categorized as an adult novel but the main character and her colleague come off as YA characters.

I received this audiobook from @macmillan.audio. All opinions are my own, and the narrator Katharine Chin is easy to listen to.

The plot thickens and the world expands while the Sylah and Anoor regress into acting like teenagers. They have both transformed into raging A-holes. Anoor is a stupid A-hole while Sylah is a rude and disrespectful A-hole. Character growth be damned! This book is categorized as adult fantasy but reads like NA/YA with how these two act towards the people around them. Hassa, you are my only hope!! Please don’t regress in book 3. 🥺
