a captivating first few pages but a slog of a book. 

every single plot twist was given away by the end of the first chapter, which made it hard to be invested in either main character’s arc or the relationships they formed. though i’m sure the intent was to allow the reader to witness the characters’ reactions to said plot points, the two heroines didn’t feel substantial enough to root for.

additionally, the fact that nearly every single chapter had a high-stakes action scene made events and names blur together until i found myself questioning why i should even pay attention. maybe with better pacing, i would’ve been able to get lost in the worldbuilding (especially with the primary sources beginning each chapter, a feature of fiction i always love to see), but i ended up leaving this book unbelievably bored.
