This book was cute and I liked the premise of it but it just didn't fully capture me. The characters/story fell a little flat for me. There were fantasy elements but they were subtle. I wish that there was a more clear line between a realistic story or a deeper fantasy plot. I'm intrigued by the Mona character and the ending says that's what book #2 is about so maybe I'd be more into that one but this one was a 3 star for me!

Absolutely loved the representation of the gender nonconformity & neurodivergence! Esp the later because i feel as though that's not often heavily represented in books. I didn't necessarily love the way the relationship with the mom develops at times and would've loved to see a deeper more thoughtful telling of the relationship with the dad outside of just his autism. Also felt like there wasn't a lot of closure at the end of the read - which, some folks might like because it's not a forced element of tying a bow on it - but for me felt a lil lackluster.

This book hit me in the heartstrings the way it talks about seeing one's worth in academia or productivity and struggling with mental health. It is simultaneously light and romantic in the main character's story with her partner she chaotically finds but also really heavy and emotional in her navigating her own sense of self worth. I would've given it a higher rating but I think the writing was a little simplistic for me, personally! There were times I wish a little more depth was given to characters rather than repeating descriptions that we've heard before, but as a debut novel it was really fantastic! Love the queer representation.

Absolutely adored the writing style of this book and the way they used stories to develop elements of the characters and switched perspectives often. I also adored the casual disability representation and the appreciation for platonic love. As a gamer, I also loved seeing my passion for gaming represented through a story!
