The very definition of overwritten. And it felt like it was done with a thesaurus the whole time.
I couldn’t figure out how old the characters were supposed to be. Their stories put them in their 20s but the writing and their behavior put them in high school.

Every aspect of the story - plot, characters, intrigue, twists - felt rather thin. The main character is unlikable and honestly a little whiny. None of the relationships or interactions between characters had any dynamics or chemistry. The world concept was interesting but the social critique was overtly on the nose and overbearing.

A sweet, short folktale-style story about the Man in the Wood and the gentleman that uproots his life.

Ooooh that last line!
I really enjoyed the alternating pov’s but almost wish they had continued throughout the whole book instead of just the first part. I also wanted more of the more interesting side characters, but the plot held up pretty well even without them.
The whole amnesia thing has been done before and I usually hate it, but this was enough of a fresh spin on it that I was willing to keep reading.

I need to stop reading books with trials as the main plot structure.
The writing was good, the setup was interesting enough for the type of story, I just don’t have it in me to read another variation of the trials concept. Maybe I’ll come back to this in a few years.

For a plot predicated on solving a murder, there is little to no sleuthing or murder solving attempted.
I liked the world a lot, but the characters were very basic, had no chemistry, and didn’t seem to be motivated to do anything related to the plot.
