The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman

Very Anne Rice-like. A little predictable, as these witches are mostly women with either raven or auburn hair, have a "sixth sense" if you will, and always feel cursed. But I was curious where the story would lead, so it gets half stars for that alone.

Lots of teenage angst. Usually I am a huge fan of YA books, but not this time

Hunger games and Solvent Green and Reached series copycat. Predictable characters and dystopia.

Lots of teenage angst, misguided science (in other words Science Fiction meets Fantasy) on time travel, and characters that have no arc. Only saving grace was the fact that it was a series, mind you it finally ended an immature series that left open-ended questions in the first two books and poor to sometimes no answers in the last.

Good story about unlikely personalities finding common ground with each other to create their own society. I listened to the audiobook and was super annoyed but the background music they added. It felt distracting and did not seem to match the current mood. But that wasn't the author's fault, so it didn't affect how many stars I gave the book. Overall, good light read that leaves you hopeful in humanity.

Good depiction of a military family where the rolls are reversed and the wife is the one laying her life on the line for her country. I could have done just fine without the bratty 12 year old, but maybe that's a tribute to Kristin Hannah's realistic writing abilities. What 12 year old girl isn't bratty, right? But I would recommend this book for the relatable characters and the hardships war bring to family life.

If you like fancy Victorian balls, high English society stories without any depth, and a whole lot of smut, this book is for you.

Good set up story for an up-and-coming detective.

Not sure why the first part of the book was linked with the rest of the book. They could have started with the detective and had a great book about the "Titanic Secret". Other than that, there was a lot of action, mystery, and pretty ingenious reveals.
