Grant by Ron Chernow

Chernow provided a well-rounded account of this much needed character during one of America's worst periods. Citing contemporaries of both lovers and haters of this man, it provided an honest, non-"revision" approach to Grant's life. It isn't fair to look back at someone in the late 1800's with a 21st century's biases like a Monday morning quarterback, as I have seen in other historians' works. Quoting memoirs, correspondance, and news articles from the period to provide Chernow's perspective was refreshing and highly appreciated. I highly recommend this book!
