i'm honestly not sure how to summarize my feelings on this book because i genuinely enjoyed 85% of it but the part i didn't enjoy made me reflect and feel differently about the parts i thought i did. the romance in this book is wonderful, the banter is great and i had a reason to root for the characters to be together, which i find is something most other romance books lack for me. this book does, however, contains a lot of sensitive and potentially triggering content. at first i thought that it was handled well and not in a sort of "trauma for trauma's sake" kind of way, but one of the plot points towards the end of the book made me rethink how i felt about the whole story. the end really pulled me out of my suspension of disbelief and kind of ruined what the rest of the book had done for me. i do think the writing was good and i loved how so much of this book celebrated black literature and i will definitely be picking up tia williams' next book. this one just didn't fully hit the mark for me, unfortunately!

this is the most gorgeous graphic novel i've ever had the privilege to read. the story is silly, but its also tender and real and horny. these are the kinds of queer stories i enjoy
the most-not ones predicated on pain but on joy and love and being weird as shit <3
