My jaw hurts from how hard I’ve had it clenched for the past 200 pages. I literally couldn’t but this down. Even knowing the general premise and lore of Carrie, Tiffany D. Jackson truly makes this story her own.

I read this for my Afrofuturism class. It was honestly shocking to see just how well these concepts and the story held up, especially considering it’s from the 1930s. Not much has changed since then. The satire was spot on and I loved the themes that were explored. There were a lot of characters to follow so that got a bit confusing at times but everything comes together really well.

This book was so good! I loved everything about it from the world building (and Witchling slang) to the characters and their burgeoning friendships. It’s always fun to see characters who may not know or like each other but are pushed to grow alongside one another in MG stories and I think Claribel A. Ortega does an amazing job of executing that. I’m super excited for book two and I can’t wait to see more of this world!

Wow, I don’t know if I even have the words to explain how engaging this was. There’s such a great balance of humor with the heavy moments but that doesn’t detract from the gravity of it. The chapters are short and make flipping through this quick. Definitely recommend, but make sure you’re in the right head space going into it. There are extensive descriptions of disordered eating, especially purging.

I’ve been meaning to read this for a while now and since my thesis is focusing on Caribbean lit, now was the perfect time. I thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories. My copy is how FULL of annotations and colorful tabs.

I’m currently wiping away tears as I write this. Frizzy was wonderful! It’s the kind of book I wish was around when I was a kid and I can’t wait to recommend it to all the kids with curly hair that cross my path. Guess I’ve found this year’s Christmas present.

This was so good! I’ve been going down the online rabbit hole of learning about fundamentalism and one YouTuber (ex-fundie diaries) mentioned this book and I’m so glad they did. I breezed through the audiobook. I was on the edge of my seat. Anthem Butler connects the history together so well and she’s so thorough in her research. This is a must read!

This really was a love letter to the Black femme experience. I enjoyed every bit of it and it was so cool to see how drastically different the art styles were between each story. It helped capture the characters even more. I’m a huge fan of seeing girl groups that are there for one another and these girls really stick together. I read the ebook but now I want to get a physical copy for my collection. Also, this better end up being a series because I need MORE!

I see why all the Booktok babes were hyping this one up. This book is MESSY and I loved it. It’s definitely better to go in knowing less because things get very wild and I loved joining Feyi on this adventure. The way she processed her grief and the communication surrounding that was so well done.

This has quickly become one of my favorite Ananse stories. I love how layered the lessons were. It was great seeing Nana have that experience of visiting Ghana on her own and learning about her culture. The friendship she built with her cousin and Akwesi was sweet. This is such a perfect read for kids!
