Inevitable Seductions by Christina C. Jones

Nubia finally gives in to Stephan in this 2nd book in the Inevitable series. I love that we get to learn more about Nubia and her past and I love that Stephan is more than just a gorgeous athlete. We get to witness their whirlwind romance and everything that comes with it.
The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson

⭐️ Trigger Warnings:: Abuse and Racism
What an amazing book. I've been avoiding YA titles but all the hype around Tiffany D. Jackson and The Weight of Blood is well deserved.
We meet Maddy Washington on quite possibly the worst day of her life- the day her secret is exposed in front of her life-long bullies and her racially divided town. We soon meet the cast of primary characters in her senior-year classmates who make up the typical high school bully squad and quickly learn that there's so much more than meets the eye.
Maddy is thrown into the national spotlight after a video surfaces of her being bullied by her classmates. The heat from the media prompts living-in-a-fairy tale Wendy to become the white savior and that's when the story takes a turn for the unavoidable worse.
Think of this as a modern-day Carrie (Stephen King) with more depth and character exploration.
I read this in 2 days...I couldn't break away from the story, the characters, the outcome. Add this to your TBR.

Only for the Week by Natasha Bishop

I finished reading this book with a literal smile on my face. Yes, it's true, Rome is the ultimate boyfriend. I love that Janelle found the love of her life. While this is a beautiful Black romance with all of the spice and carefree love, one of the things I loved most about this story was how Janelle's confidence grew in two weeks.
It can sometimes only take one person to come into your life and love you so completely that you begin to see yourself in a completely different way- that's what Rome is for Janelle and there's nothing better than that.
Beneath the love story, Janelle is struggling with family dynamics that consistently force her to diminish herself and Rome helps her see her own value and eventually stand up for herself.
If you've ever been in a bridal party or dealt with family drama that forced you to create boundaries you'll be able to relate to this story.
Only for the Week is more than a romance, it's a timeless tale of finding and loving yourself.

Great quick read
I definitely didn’t see that ending!
This was a quick, attention grabbing read that definitely left me wanting more.
Be careful what you ask for…

The Getaway by Lamar Giles
4.0
The Getaway is a terrifying tale rooted in a very likely reality
We meet Jay, living “the good life” in the sought-after Karloff Country. Life outside the walls of Karloff is chaotic, to say the least, and people visit Karloff for a temporary escape from reality. Think Disney in a post-apocalyptic world.
All is well in Jay’s world until Connie- one of his closest friends- and her family disappear in the middle of the night. Of course, everyone in charge acts as if nothing happens until they can’t. Almost overnight Karloff turns from sugar to shit as some of the world's wealthiest and entitled families begin to arrive and turn Jay’s utopia upside down.
Turns out there’s a war raging outside the walls and the Karloff family has sold shares in their fortified oasis to the highest bidder- making Jay, his family, and friends unwilling servants and the beck and call of treacherous trustees.
Unwilling to bend to this new way of life and abuse of power, Jay and his crew devise a harrowing escape to the unknown and hopeful freedom.
I’m becoming quite the fan of YA thrillers and this book reminds me of why I like the genre so much. The characters are relatable believable and well-developed- we get to know their backstories and I’m crossing my fingers that we’ll have a 2nd installment that will follow them outside the Karloff walls.
While the ending left me with several questions- it wasn’t bad. The characters were leaving or taking steps into the unknown so it’s only fair that as the reader we’d draw our conclusions.
There were a few moments that dragged however I think it was essential to the overall telling of the story.
This was a great read that I’d recommend for both YA and adult readers. It definitely makes you think about the state of current affairs and what could realistically happen if some things don’t change in our society.

In Their Shadows by Briana Cole
4.0
**I received an ARC copy of this title via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.**
This book was amazing!
“April awoke, disoriented; briefly unsure which one of her husbands lay beside her.”
In Their Shadows by Briana Cole had me hooked from the start and you can see why. Before reading this, I briefly met April- the main character- in Behind Her Lives, trust me when I tell you that she deserves ALL of the karma that’s coming her way.
April is juggling two husbands and a double life. If that wasn’t enough, her scheming past is catching up with her. After years of draining bank accounts, breaking hearts, and switching identities like changing socks someone is out to make her pay.
She’s desperately trying to find her stalker, keep up with her lies, and walk away with all her money intact. The problem is, she’s led and ruined so many lives that the attack could be coming from anywhere.
Each page is a twist and turn that will keep you on edge. For as terrible as April is, I even found myself rooting for her at times (a sure sign of a well-written story and character).
This was such a good read- I rearranged plans and read it all day kind of good.
If you like mysteries with vivid characters, suspense, and surprises, you’ll love this book.
*4 stars b/c I do feel like some characters with significance are introduced and then forgotten about/not mentioned with no closure.*
P.S. I recommend reading Behind Her Lives
