Interesting topic but very stilted writing.
I liked the first book mostly for Bast but I just couldn't get into this one. I may try to pick it back up later on but the plot just kind of meanders.
I had high hopes for this book based on reviews that I had read. I do get it... Laini Taylor has a gift for descriptive writing. It makes you forget that books are supposed to have plots. That's not to say that authors can't meander into side stories and back stories but there was just too much going on. Too many characters. Too many unoriginal tropes.
The only reason I am giving it 2 stars is because I appreciated that she didn't shy away from how assault affects people, and how victims -both women and men- deal with their grief. It's just a shame that she couldn't have tightened the story up because those themes deserved a stronger narrative focus.

This is a very enjoyable book. Lamora is a an interesting protagonist (it's a relative term since he's not always a likable character). The plot was faced paced and kept you guessing or shocks you, or makes you cringe depending. This would have been a five star book except I found the authors overuse of italics was distracting- especially during tense scenes.
I was raised by a working mother (and father) who very frequently told me that I will have to work twice as hard for 2/3 the pay. Sheryl Sandberg synthesizes a lot of the advice and observations that she often makes about the role of women in the workforce.
Sandberg write conversationally but it is still a call to action. I hope women and men read this and act.
