i am honestly not sure how to rate this book. This was a great series but the ending left me feeling unsatisfied. The story sort of meandered away from the core plot at times and then only picked up snippets of it later. The ending was similar to many other fantasy books. However i liked having the Bard in it more, I would have liked to have seen the plot develop a little bit more. I was left with more answers then I should hsve been in a conclusion.
I liked this book and with a little more world building and some back story I would have loved this book. I also didn't really care for the love story. It felt a little forced. I want someone to write a story where the young lady doesn't have to fall in love with an older broken man to learn about herself and her magical abilities. (They're out there... Lucy Pevensie, Eilonwy, Annabeth... I just want to see more. Not that romance is a bad thing in a story but I don't like it when it makes the character silly-weak.) I would have liked a little more reasoning on why Nym should serve this greater purpose, too.
That being said it is an enjoyable read. I will read the next one. There are just a few things that could have made this a truly exceptional book.

This is such a funny and endearing book. Gerald Durrell is a famous conservationist while his older brother is an author. The rest of the family is equally hysterical. The descriptions of Corfu will make you want to pack up and set off on an adventure right away. The magpie seen is probably one of the funniest moments in the book.
I read this book at my dad's insistence... He even bought me the fancy special edition. I really like it. They spoke of some very relevant faith issues even though it was written many years ago. Some of the names are different since the setting is Norway, I believe. I recommend it for both Lutherans and non-Lutherans.
I liked this book a lot. It's not exactly sweet but it is endearing. Plus Ross has cutie potential! I enjoyed it a lot.
I bought this book because of its cover, I love maps and cardinal roses and a nice deckled edge. It called to me from the bottom row in the children's section at Barnes and Nobles. I had to have it! So I bought it after only skimming the jacket.

It must have been divine intervention that lead me to the book because I devoured this book! There is so much going for it. An interesting steampunk vibe. A series of religions with rules and backstories to make Brandon Sanderson proud. A plucky heroine who has a problem with time. Missing parents, a kidnapped uncle, and new friend found covered in feathers at a circus. It was a glorious read. Yes it was a little predictable and some of the key details should have been fleshed out a little bit more but over all an addicting read. Also I really think that this is a book more appropriate for Young Adult than Middle Grade. There are some terrifying moments and a madwoman. So use caution if you are looking at this for children. 14+ is my reccomendation.
(I have been watching a lot of Murdoch Mysteries on Netflix. Yannick Bisson would make a great Shadrack)
