4.5 stars! I'm a sucker for separate storylines that come together in some dramatic way. Souren broke my heart. And I didn't expect there to be a twist at the end of a historical fiction!

This book is definitely for the soul who loves to read philosophical conversations, as well as reflections on life and love! I wouldn't recommend this book to any of my friends who are plot-driven readers - most of the plot is in the imagination of the reader as they discover the context: 1950s segregated St. Louis as a white "good-for-nothing" preacher's son slowly falls in love with an African American high school teacher. It's sweet, moving, and perhaps a little too long for what it was hoping to achieve - I really liked it. I wish it could have alternated between Jack and Della's POVs.

the sequel was even better than the first, and I didn’t think I’d like the twist in POVs, but I was wroooooong.
