The writing and dual point of views, I enjoyed. This prequel is very angst heavy.

No smut. No romance. (Doesn’t need to be, just mentioning it.)

The sacrificing your integrity, morals, body, pride and livelihood for a drunk proud father and a mother that is too depressed in her own “I used to have it all” prideful world to give a damn is too much for me. Also, to be attracted to someone whom you fear and embarrasses and demeans you for their own pleasure is not my cup of tea ☕️

The Society, BCA, The Lawless, Blue Bloods, ranking games with rooks and Aces make for a very intriguing story. After reading this prequel into Scarlet’s origin story I kinda wanna know more. However, not for the characters, but for the world building and plot. The characters did not move me.

Pet-peeve:
We know they’re step siblings with no blood relation, every other paragraph they were calling each other step this and step that, Luna even thought it. Which kept taking me out of the story because if you think it like it’s wrong then it’s wrong and you should stop. It’s like the author felt the need to keep reminding us that they were step siblings. We know! You can’t forget that part.

Tropes:
Forbidden love
Secret societies
Alpha male dominant

Trigger warning ⚠️:
“Step-sibling” smut

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the setting, the plot, the characters, the blending of families and the dual pov. I also liked that the author embraced that a man isn’t always the person that has to apologize. The family dynamics were relatable and realistic.

I listened to this on Scribd.

I enjoyed this book. Meka James has done it again, for me.

Regina being thique, voluptuous, locs flowing, and confident did it for me. Alec being younger and meeting his match, in a sense, also pushed the plot for me. The emotional maturity that everyone eventually arrives at is a destination that was well worth traveling.

Irene was insufferable! But I loved Remi! I enjoyed her standing in her truth and not backing down. I respected her creating boundaries and holding Irene accountable for her behavior. Slow burn.

Funny as hell!
