Loved the sense of place/gothic feel. Did not love the miscommunication trope. Surprised by how much religion it has, but I guess it makes sense given the period it was written (same can be said about women's brains lol)

I was attracted by the premise and the book had a good start, but it waned after the first third or so. I thought there were too many social issues the book sought to critique, but at times these felt forced to fit into the narrative.
Social critique meets slow burn thriller (?)
