Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol
4.5
This was a fun middle grade graphic novel heavily rooted in a true story. It was interesting to see a first-hand perspective of a Russian scouting camp in the US. If you are a scout or know a scout, I highly recommend it. It's an easy and quick read with a beautifully limited color palette

This book is getting a rewrite so I won't be sharing my thoughts yet

I like the combination of the different timelines. My favorite aspect of this story is how the main couple almost seems overly perfect at first, it really hooked me into the story.
Overall I did enjoy this one pretty well, I just wanted to see more character development.

A Mark on My Soul by Jordon Greene

It was a beautiful BIPOC queer story. Seeing a realistic but still beautifully written queer story was delightful. I liked the different approaches to their identities that each character had.
There was a massive tone shift in the middle of the book that was a bit startling. I was minding my business on a walk listening to a lighthearted story then bam! I think there honestly should've been trigger warnings as part of the audiobook.
I was NOT prepared for the ending. It wrecked me for multiple days. What a powerful and truthful ending. (No spoilers here but dangggg, many tears) Totally worth it just emotionally prepare yourself more than I did.

To be honest, I am massively confused by the ending. Having an overall unreliable narrator didn't help.
My favorite part of this book by far was the narration. The narration conveyed passion well and employed tone excellently. It felt like the characters were really talking, not just purely reading the words on the page.
There was an absolute ton of spicy scenes that would be difficult to skip. If that isn't your thing, I do not recommend this book.

No real rating or review for an incomplete story. But I read it and liked where it is headed
Overturned by Lamar Giles

This was a very powerful and engaging story. I thought it had a lot of extra value being told from a BIPOC perspective. This depth and representation was wonderful to see!
I was initially attracted to this book due to the cover and knew nothing about it. I was not disappointed with what it brought to the table. I liked that the character we are following isn't always in the right. She makes some wrong choices and has to deal with the consequences. I found myself on the edge of my seat to learn what happened right along with her.

Just Complicated by Evie Sterling

What a ride. Seeing Evie take on the mystery genre with this series has been interesting. It feels like as each book in the series goes on, she matches the tone I'd expect from a mystery with some romance elements more and more. I would still never complain if there was a heaping helping more of Evie's signature romantic sweetness in the final book though. What can I say, it's what I love her for.
I will admit, I had a bit of a hard time staying engaged with this one. Something about it just didn't let me get sucked in. Perhaps it was that the where the chapters started and ended felt really arbitrary. Being in a liminal reading space like that can be a challenge for me especially.
I loved the chance to learn more about Quinn and Tommy. They are deeply fascinating characters that absolutely deserved a bit more of the spotlight. I hope to see them fully blossom in the final book where we better get a happy ending for them all.
I received this book as part of Evie's Hayling Bookstorm street team. My review is honest and voluntary.

The Charlie Method by Elle Kennedy
4.5
This one was a fun time to read. I loved the inclusion of mixed media to break up the monotony and add a bit of humor. I had a lot of fun annotating the funny elements and interacting with the book as I went.
I will say this book was probably longer than it needed to be. There were a TON of spicy scenes which upped the page count a good bit, but does reflect the characters quite well. In terms of the actual plot, I wouldn't remove any of it. It had me hooked the whole time, excited to see where things would unfold next. There were a lot of different forms of drama and I was here for it. It honestly gave me the vibes of a soap opera set at a college.
I liked the dual plotline of Will and his father drama, plus Charlie's family drama, and Beckett's trust issues combined with the romance elements. Having these characters have things to work out on their own really added to the realism. They all have flaws that make them feel like rounded out people.
As I mentioned earlier, there are a ton of spicy scenes, including literally on page one. If that is not your thing, I do not recommend this book.

Blind Date with a #HOCKEYBOY by Ariana St. Claire

This one was a nice and fun read to squeeze in at the end of the month! The concept was super fun, and I enjoyed reading it.
My only complaint was that there were times it was a bit difficult to follow who was who and what was happening. I assume the final book does have that fixed though.
There are spicy scenes but they can be skipped without missing any plot. That said, the novella is already quite short so it may not be worthwhile in that instance.
