The book begins with an intriguing premise: a nurse named Brooke working in a prison has a complicated history with Shane, a charming but dangerous inmate. How did Brooke's testimony contribute to Shane's incarceration? What exactly happened between these mysterious star-crossed lovers? This creates palpable tension and propels the reading experience. The settings for both the characters' past and present are everyday environments depicted with grit, realism, and good period detail, which helps to ground the story.

However, The Inmate loses grip as, given the central traumatic twist in their history involving violence and betrayal, the current "reconciliation" dynamic strains credibility.

Overall, it was a nice quick read, but I probably won't read it again.

In 2022, I came across a captivating romance novel that stood out. It was a dark gothic fantasy romance, something that I hadn't explored before. I was in a reading slump, but this book helped me break out of it. Although I was hesitant to read it at first due to the presence of a love triangle and the fact that it was quite lengthy, I decided to give it a chance. And boy, was I glad I did. The love triangle in this book is not what you'd expect, and it is written so beautifully that it didn't bother me at all.

The slow-burn romance in the book was something that I absolutely adored. If you're not a fan of slow burns, I'd still recommend giving this book a chance. However, be warned that it is dark, so please check for any trigger warnings!! The characters in the book are lovable, with an admirable heroine and an obsessed anti-hero. Amon, the anti-hero, is a character that really stood out to me and I couldn't help but fall in love with him. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good dark romance novel, especially one with a gothic fantasy twist.
