I wish the whole collection was as good as the first story!

An intriguing insight into Man Ray's life and art, along with the many other creatives he rubbed shoulders with. Kiki features a bit but there was a disappointing lack of Lee Miller.

This was a really fun read that's quite light in style, although it does discuss some deep topics. There are definitely a few chapters which didn't feel as strongly connected to the thesis of the book as the others, but I think the decision to include snippets at the start of every chapter which highlighted the landscape of the year (particularly regarding the AIDs crisis) were particularly impactful.

Aliette de Bodard's writing is something I always enjoy! This has very background worldbuilding inspired by pre-colonial Vietnam and I really feel like I could read a much longer work set in this world. I would have loved Giang to be developed a bit further, they're quite central but I feel like Thahn and Eldris come across so strongly that in comparison Giang feels a bit more like an idea than a fully fleshed out character. But the prose was lovely as always!
