This was book was pretty good, but I also expected more. I feel like the first half moved kinda slow and didn’t do the best job at building the tension. Like yes, obviously they are into each other but in the first four years there’s no ✨moments✨ just a lot of wondering if the other feels the same but then when they finally get together it’s like BAM BAM BAM. I will say that I like that they get together and the story doesn’t end there.

Speaking of the ending, that twist at the end needed more. Listen, I mainly read this book but found an audiobook copy which I put on as my partner and I drove home, of course it’s when the spice starts (around 65% in) and boyyyyyy do they give it to you. It kept going and going and going and before you know we were home and these two are still going! I’m here for spice but after almost 30ish minutes I was like lord let’s get back to the story. Even my partner who had listened to some of my other books with spice was like, 🤨🤨🤨. It did give us some good laughs tho. But anyways my point is you give us all that spice (which wasn’t the last of it) but then that twist felt soooo rushed, I think it was maybe only a chapter? I felt like the author could’ve given us more.

I enjoyed the plot but I feel like once the sex was introduced it was like that was that. I feel like I was left wanting to know more about how she started doing this killings. We learned about how he did and had glimpse of flashbacks of what lead to her starting but I still am like wait….so what happened. I guess you can fill in the blanks but I guess I just wanted more.

Either way I will definitely continue the series as I enjoy the concept! I was able to get Leather & Lark in audiobook so keep an eye out for that review!

Wow. Just wow. So much happens in this book and so many new character introductions. You know, the moment I met Rowan I understood why Dorian and Chaol never did it for me like that. Good guys but yea…

I love seeing the growth that Caelena goes through in this book. I just love her so much tbh. She is such a badass character and I’m so excited to see how her journey goes.

At first the witches chapters felt pointless but I just know it’s part of a larger story and I ended up wanting more of their chapters as the book went on.

I think the thing that really got me is how much Fourth Wing got Inspo from this…I don’t know if it bothers me or not yet. I know it’s impossible to write something 100% one of a kind and to not find Inspo anywhere and everywhere but we’ll see how the story goes….

Also, I can really love romance and maybe was hoping for more of it in this series but I’m actually truly enjoying it being more of a sub plot and just being able to enjoy Caelenas journey. I gonna take a quick pause from the series as I’m officially half way through and I just don’t want it to end. 😩

I'm feeling a bit meh about this book. I knew it was a prequel, but I didn't realize it was five short novellas. For the most part, they were a bit boring. They’d pick up towards the end, but I kept wanting more. I was also excited to finally learn about the great romance with Sam, but there was barely enough of Sam, and their love felt rushed and more tragic than anything else.

I'm content with my decision to start this series with "Throne of Glass." Caelena felt so young and arrogant in this book, and it made me realize I’m really glad I met her with more maturity (not that 18 is that much better, lol). I don’t think I would’ve liked this series as much if I had started with this book. I also liked how "Throne of Glass" started by just throwing me into the story. I didn’t enjoy pausing the main storyline and will have to see if taking a break from it to read these prequel novellas really matters in the long run.

I really do like Caelena, so I'm still glad I read this book and got to know her better. I'm very excited to keep going with the main story!
