Had to sit with this book for quite while before settling on the 5⭐ rating.
This book is loud, its metaphores anything but subtle. It's vile, and it absolutely demands your attention. often times horror writers are in a competition to write the grossest thing out there just for the sake of it. This book is gross and nauseating but uses that to make it's point and it makes it point well. I couldn't put it down. It's not for everyone, but it definitely was the book for me.
Despite the book's subject and message, Allison Rumfitt shows off some amazing writing skills. They way she utelizes different perspectives, breaks the 4th wall, uses punctuation, all of it should be studied by any aspiring writer no matter which genre.

Israel vertelt op een intrigerende en open manieren over wat hij heeft mee gemaakt aan de grillen van zijn vader. Hiermee krijgt hij zelf de kans om te vertellen wat er echt is gebeurd in plaats van media speculatie.
Hoe geef je dan een rating aan iemands levensverhaal? Los van dat is het boek erg goed geschreven, niet iedereen die iets heftigs meemaakt weet dit ook goed onder woorden te brengen. Israel weet zijn schrijversstem snel en goed te vinden. Hierdoor leest het boek makkelijker weg en weet hij zijn onbegrijpelijke realiteit begrijpelijk te maken. Hierom 4 sterren.

On it's own this is a fun tense horror mystery book. However I read this just after I've read The Hollow Places by the same author and it was dissapointed to see just how simmilar both of these books where. Both books follow the exect same template but The Hollow Places just does it better. If you want to read both start with this one, if you want to read only one, read The Hollow Places.
The book was a fun journey but after the start it started to drag in the middle. Once we got to the actual part where our main character actually got to meet the source of the mystery, that's when the fun actually started. This however was really just the last 80-90 pages of a 400 page book.

At one point I literally wanted to vomit. What a great horror book!
It's a gripping tale of a toxic relationship gone even more wrong. It could've benefited from being a bit more of a slow burn but it works great as this short novella.

Toch bijzonder, in de brugklas las ik over Rosa's brugklas avonturen en nu 24 lees ik over volwassenen Rosa's avonturen. Het is een classic HOI boek, goed en vlot geschreven, veel survival tips en voor mij een flinke dosis nostalgie.
Het is een goed boek als je met HOI bent opgegroeid. Het boek lijkt mij geen goede introductie voor de serie. Als je geen nostalgische gevoelens hebt voor de karakters is het wellicht wat moeilijk inkomen. Het taalgebruik is nog hetzelfde als de oudere boeken die geschreven zijn als jeugd literatuur, alleen de problemen van de karakters zijn nu dus heel volwassen.
Als je nog onder de 18 bent, lees dan eerst de oudere boeken en kom dan later terug voor deze.
