The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

I’m not really sure who this is written for. It’s not that interesting besides some rudimentary political philosophy. I only read it because I’m in my Hunger Games Renaissance era, and even that didn’t save it from being a chore to finish.
The New Windmill Book Of Classic Short Stories by Jane Browne, Christine Hall, Mike Hamlin
What a little treasure plucked from my grandad’s bookcase! I love ghost stories with a twist, but … did Virginia … f*** the ghost?
Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer

Edward is truly unbearable. But I did laugh when Bella lists every book she loves with the exception of Austen’s Emma - because the heroine is too unlikeable.
I keep changing my rating between 1 and 2 stars. Like on one hand meyer needs to retire the same guardian angel/persephone metaphors and pick up some new editors. But on the other hand this book was a lil silly, a lil fun, worth reading for the eye rolls

The Animals at Lockwood Manor by Jane Healey

I wanted to like this! The gothic, the WLW, the flowing prose - these are why I persevered much longer than i would’ve with other book. But ultimately this is a very underwhelming read. I agree with other reviews that the plot was too loose and inconsequential to follow. But for me it was the characters who let this story down. They are poorly developed, unlikable, and their relationships with one another (especially the main romance) unconvincing and boring. If you lose interest after the first dozen pages, don’t bother - it doesn’t get any better
