The mystery was very dark, even if the culprit was easy to pick, but the continuing development of the family characters was rewarding. I would still like to see a simpler, less dark murder mystery again, like the early stories in the series

A densely compact history of this famous city. I enjoyed the clear-eyed unsentimentality of the author's style, and learned a lot. The effect overall was rather depressing - a cronicle of 1000 years of the usual catalogue of selfishness, greed, and self-aggrandisement that is human nature in governance.  But   I am glad I read it

The sections on memorising were helpful, especially the counterproductive impact of overmemorising. His praiase for monoligual dictionaries was also a joy to read.

THe second story was a drudge to get through, the brother was one of the most awful characters I've read in a Regency and that he changed NOT AT ALL, was ugh.
