American Gods by Neil Gaiman

2.5/5 stars. This book was such a slog to read. It felt very “meh”. I thought the premise was interesting and was expecting so much more. Maybe that was my downfall. The main character grew on me decimal by decimal… I just found him really boring. Plot was averagely fine. I think I’m just disappointed because I wanted to like this book so bad but I couldn’t. Glad I read it but won’t be rereading (ever).

This was charming read, I’d give it a strong 2.5-3 stars. The plot was engaging and felt like a true adventure tale. Apparently this was read to me as a bedtime story when I was younger but I don’t remember it as well as the other books in the series. I liked the characters too but something didn’t quite sit right with me sometimes in terms of the different “cultures” of Narnians and the Calormenes. It was written in a different time but yeah, still made me slightly uncomfortable sometimes.

I inhaled this book. It was so intimate and beautiful. I wrote in my notes:

How can Sally Rooney romanticise texting between two people, with a flirtatious tone but also capture the mundanity of it.

Some gorgeous descriptions of places, atmospheres and people. Utterly absorbed it. It’s a slay from me. 5/5 stars.
