I received an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed it. This was a great debut novel for Mayers. I thought the story was great. The dynamic between humans and the creatures that invades them is fairly unique.
I liked the way the creatures called Vevin communicate. It was definitely unique and I appreciated the newness of it. I enjoyed the world building as well and the author’s setup of everything.
The main character, Marla, finds herself developing abilities not unlike what the Vevin can do. This sends her on a whirlwind of an adventure. Following her was a bit frustrating at times, but I feel that may have been the point. I could be wrong. I enjoyed most of the characters and their development.
I think this is the beginning of a pretty interesting series, and I’m curious to see what this author comes up with next.

For a debut book, it sure doesn’t feel like it! This was a fantasy read. Dark and gritty. It is the perfect grimdark fantasy. The author has no favorites and everyone is at stake. The writing was fantastic. Not a moment dragged.
