This is a phenomenal book that is well written and engaging. The depth of character development and focus on the dragons sets it apart from other dragon books. The characters are also likeable and the plot is interesting. Honestly one of the best books I've read in a while!

Ok hear me out this is not some crazy 700 pg high fantasy journey with hours of complex world building. It is, however, a well written easy read. It was a fun adventure that was engaging and compelling throughout. The characters are likeable and the kitten is the best part. Overall just an enjoyable book.

ARC review: Compelling and well written book with a unique plot. Pulled me in right away and kept me turning pages until the end. Interesting magic system and solidly written characters. My only real issue was that the cliff hanger ending felt abrubt and made the story feel incomplete. It made me interested in reading future books but also felt a little unsatisfying with too many questions left unanswered.

3.5 rounded down because of all the 5 stars posted before release/without reading.

Let's preface this with me saying if you loved this book. I LOVE that for you. I'm tired of social media shaming people for the things they like. Enjoy and celebrate the things you like!

I wanted to love this book and don't get me wrong, I still liked it. It is entertaining and worth reading (which is what 3 star means). There's just so many things that bring it down, including Yarros's only ok writing. Her writing style feels immature compared to others writing similar books. I can't tell you how many times I found myself rolling my eyes or wondering who someone was or where a place was. Continously bringing in minor characters that were briefly mentioned in book one or two without the slightest reintroduction or additional information. Repeatedly switching from first names to last names when talking about characters when we were told their last names two books ago. I've never experienced a book I had to work so hard to keep track of characters, especially very minor ones. It pulled me out of the story and made the entire book less enjoyable.

The best parts of the book were the dragons and finding out more signets. The different Isles and cultures of the Isles was interesting but felt rushed. Also Ridoc, Garrick, and Dain all getting more story time was awesome. Still enjoyed the book it just isn't a 4 or higher.

Also, why have a map if half the book takes place in the Isles that aren't even on the map?

These books are just so good. The writing and the characters are just absolutely enjoyable. The plot is engaging, and the magic system is unique. The cats add an adorable fun aspect to the story that had me smiling multiple times throughout. Just a well written solid story with likeable characters.
