I honestly didn't think I'd like this book. I thought I'd be bored with the look back. But I LOVED it. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I looked forward to how Cas thought and felt about each moment. Very well done.

Beautifully written, and a wonderful prequel to the Blood Grace series. I do wish this book could have been longer, with even more depth. And perhaps some story about their later trials, when

Nephalea and Iskhyra are captured and Alkaios must try to escape the war mages.

I did give this four stars instead of three, but that's due to my hope that the issue of Jadren's near immortality, while Seliah will eventually die (while mentioned), will be satisfactorily addressed in the next trilogy about Alise. I'm also very curious about the references in previous books to his fertility. I feel we were led to believe that he has children within the house, but this was also not addressed.
