The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende

I can stand Allende's novels. I read House of the Spirits and gaslit myself into thinking I liked it, even if it left me with an icky feeling. Her books give this false idea of female solidarity while promoting female complacency without being aware of that. Everything feels like its written for the male gaze, not for women and I HATE it. I can't stand it. I don't even know if this is an unpopular opinion and I don't care.

Ryan la Sala has a way of creating a world within our world. He's just gotten better with this book compared to Reverie and I am living for it. The mystery, the action, the relationships, all of it had me sucked in the entire time. The only reason it isn't a full 5 stars is that I was not a big fan with HOW the end played out. Maybe a little less abrupt? And of course, I was heartbroken about
the romance not ending happily, but as time has gone on, I've learned to deal with it

I ate this book up! It was an easy and indulgent read. However, because I read it so quick, I failed to realize its shortcomings. They began becoming more apparent to me as I neared the end of the book. The plot did not feel entirely fleshed out, so in turn the parts of it that effect the characters felt unconvincing. With that all being said, I adored the characters and
am genuinely disappointed that the book doesn't promise more of them in their element.

While I enjoyed the characters, the plot was what let it down. It eventually began to feel that the author had lost the thread along the way. However, I would say it was never there to begin with. This resulted in a slow, painful read even while I could acknowledge the world building and the characters.

I was just not feeling it. I didn't know what I would get out of it and it wasn't promising anything worthwhile.

This book is the type of fantasy that I adore. It feels plucked from a fairytale while still breathing life into the characters. The world is enchanting and terrifying. At its base, it keeps things simple. It doesn't try to reach beyond its bounds and make a mess of everything.

I love the movement into a new arc and the plathora of new characters, some likeable, others not so much. The new abilities and personalities was great.

Started off pretty strong, but after that there were stories that left no impact and were not worth the time I spent slogging through them.

I've stopped trying to completely understand the sorcerers' abilities. I'm just gonna pretend like I already do.
