This is a heavily character focused book, the plot is barely relevant. its more about the journey and how they characters react/grow closer. Unfortunately i didnt care for the characters much at all so, i found it very boring. Nothing actually happens and when something does, it doesnt effect the plot. maybe im too used to action oriented books but the entire book just seems to be people talking to each other and infodumping. There isnt even any sort of inner conflict for any of the characters or conflict between the crew (save for one person).
I've thought a lot about the structure of the book and realized that it is monster-of-the-week in book form. But the monsters are customs officers or "heathen" aliens. Its exactly like those animated cable shows where some conflict thats mostly disconnected from the main arc occurs but you get some nice character moments out of it at the very least.
I know a lot of people looove the cast but I honestly feel nothing. About the characters or the book. I won't be picking up the next in the series anytime soon.
