What a glorious, simple, relatable book. Reminded me that the journey and the trying and struggling are the best parts of any accomplishment. “In real life, joy comes in a rush, so fast, so sweet, she can’t hold on to it. She bends over, breathing hard, and what stays with her is the trying. Not the moment she pulled up, but all the hours falling.” (315)

I was impressed by Allegra Goodman’s character development of both Sam and the people around her… I especially loved Ann, her boyfriend’s great grandmother who encourages Sam to follow her passion of geography and reminds her that there is no time like the present.

Sam’s relationship with her father and her love of climbing are the heart of this book. Prepare to shed some tears.

This book triggered a few anxiety attacks for me but I still enjoyed it. It reminded me of a modern House of Mirth, with a less likable heroine. The ending could have been better/more fleshed out but that’s my only complaint!

An easy, romantic beach read that I finished in one day because I couldn’t put it down! Solid read.

Spooky, scary, could have been more in depth, but I liked the premise!

Despite the fact that Nabokov is an extremely talented writer, I couldn’t get over how painful it was to be inside of the mind of a pedophile. I’m glad I read it because I’ve always been curious about this book, but I also wish I hadn’t because of its disturbing contents. I’m usually a fan of gross and disturbing shit, but this book revealed to me that there is a line that even my messed up mind doesn’t want to cross.

Loved this book, it creeped me out, I wanted the ending to be more satisfying, but you can’t always get what you want!!
