Very lovely prose-like writing style and engaging overall. Subject matter was very gritty.

Great quotes on art, life, and philosophy. Amazing writing and the plot got very immersive and intriguing towards the second half. A very accessible classic.

An easy read but not incredible. I don’t know if it’s because I had never read a memoir before or because of this author’s writing style, but some parts felt too descriptive. Like when people say ‘show don’t tell,’ this book ‘told’ a bit too much. It didn’t have the depth of writing to fully immerse me into the world (her life). It felt like it just listed a lot of descriptions without painting a picture. Also VERY food focused, I definitely expected it to be a motif as it was a core part of her relationship with her mother, but the descriptions of food and cooking were way too in depth. Like at one point it was basically a non-fiction recipe book tutorial on what she was making. Also the ending seemed pretty sudden. Overall pretty entertaining easy read but just didn’t fully connect with it and the writing wasn’t my favourite kind.
