zauner's descriptions of her relationship with her mother, particularly as a teenager, hit close enough to home that i often had to stop what i was doing and sit for a moment while listening to the audiobook. the descriptions of food are written with so much care throughout, i love the idea of food as a love language or means of connection and this memoir embodies that fully.

one of those books that feels like its got its fist wrapped around your heart, especially the final third. donal ryan has an unmatched talent for depicting rural life with all its ugliness intact, but without condescending to the setting or the characters. can't wait to continue working my way through his bibliography.
