right off the bat, I WISH THERE WAS A TW FOR MEDICAL TORTURE! that made me really uncomfortable.
not sure how to feel about this one. don't expect a very happy sapphic relationship from this book. every single relationship until the final one has an imbalance of power at best and is abusive at worst.
jordan is undoubtedly an abuser, and so is chester, that is plain in the text. i dont think minnie is much better than them though. she loves flora but never really has her best interests at heart. she saves flora from being hurt by her abuser, but shes the one who made her live under the abuser's roof. she looks out for herself to the detriment of others and towards the end of their relationship, betrays and lies to flora constantly. i understand that she is traumatized and often unable to make change, but in moments when she has the chance to make a choice, she makes the selfish oneeg. refusing to run away with flora and subsequently dooming her to the aforementioned medical torture. there was also no need for the pedophilia and incest subplot, imo. polly did not need to be abused sexually, and it does minne's character no favours to show how she turned a blind eye to her daughter getting molested and sa'd by her father.
i think abernathy and flora are the only characters i was genuinely rooting for, soim very happy that they ended up safe and living peacefully at the end with polly. all in all, not as bad as i thought it would be from reading reviews, but still challenging.
