I was hooked on Newbury & Hobbes after consuming this book. A definite page turner with lots of intrigue. I love how the occult is such an important part in Newbury's role as an agent for the queen. The characters are all very well developed and easy to get attached to. I always try to recommend this series of books to folks who are into Sherlock Holmes style mysteries and seem to have an appreciation for fantasy as well (or are at least willing to explore that genre a bit). A must read for any steampunk!

This was likable, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Akers' Burn Cycle books. I love his imagery in this tale, especially how the main character boosts her abilities by inciting myths related to her god. Akers has a wonderful talent for storytelling. The only part that I didn't like about this tale was that the main character was a little to "cut and dry" for me. It made her difficult to like, but that could have been part of the author's objective.

This is a fun read for anyone who enjoyed the Burn Cycle books, Dead of Veridon and Heart of Veridon. I hope for more tales in this setting. Bones of Veridon is a collection of early sketches by the author and supplemental short stories that are related to the universe that Veridon resides within.

Great book --- I love the fact that the battles all take place at the captain's perspective. It is amazing how much suspense can be built up without being right in the line of action of the story. The concept is also very interesting. I look forward to reading more and following how Captain Geary falls into the "Black Jack" legend that was built up around him.
