I wanted to like this book, but by the end I was happy to close it. It relies too much on gross details. The characters end up being lost and muddled. There are plenty of books with unlikeable characters that are great - but the mark was just completely missed here. The only (arguably) interesting things about them are the gross things they do.
I kept read for the writing style, which I did really like. BUT, I did have one moment where I almost DNF and I never DNF a book. The transphobia was just too much. It was brutal. I feel like Palahniuk was trying to dig around for a point in one particular story but only succeeded in going backward. He came off as a try-hard and had me dragging my feet through the rest of the book.
Want something fucked up? Read this.
Want something that feels thoughtful? Read something else.
