Tia Williams, the woman you are Hands down my new favorite book (besides daisy j obviously). As a BW, this book touched me in such a magical way, and I wish I could reread it for the first time.
There was nothing about this book I didn't like I'm literally obsessed with everything about it. This is probably the one book where I didn't mind the long chapters, flashbacks, constant pop culture references, and insta love (it somehow managed to work idk) cause im not a fan of those in books. I love Shane and Eva as characters and as a couple, they were so beautiful and gosh I wish I had a Shane. All the characters in this were amazing especially Audre, I adore her sm. It's so nice and refreshing to read a book with black characters that don't constantly deal with oppression or some type of trauma 24/7. Yes, this book has the trauma but the characters are also being written in different ways besides that. It gets exhausting constantly seeing media where black characters are the butt of some type of trauma again and again and again, never a happily ever after just misery. Obviously because this was a black author I didn't expect that but my point still stands. But anyway, it was an extremely good black romance and I'll definitely start reading more books like these I'm angry with myself for not doing it sooner. It's honestly a breath of fresh air. To end off I just wanna say, one of my main favorite things about this book was learning of Evas invisible disability and how it disrupted her life and made her feel alienated. It was really interesting and some of it even projected into my own life dealing with chronic pain so I really love that. This book is perfection and I'm gonna miss reading it&
3.75 stars — if i got a dollar every time adams name is mentioned i’d be a rich man!!
ok but seriously this was good. it’s a really good start to the series and im excited (kinda dreading it too) for the rest of the series. the writing is good and fast paced and i loveeee the short chapters. i hate how long it’s taken me to read this😣
moving on to the characters — adam is annoying im tired of seeing his name every goddamn page, juliette is cool im excited to see her character development, aaron is unhinged, and kenji is the loml. i didn’t care at all for adam and juliette as a couple, that love confession less than 200 pages in was just ew and their whole relationship is just..not it.
the only flaw with this book is adam/his relationship with juliette. the constant mentioning of his name every single page and i mean EVERY SINGLE PAGE was so annoying i wanted to sob. besides all that this book was good and i can’t wait to read the rest! i will not let this teeny tiny thing deter me i swear.
