What a rollercoaster, and not just the plot! I started off hating the narration. It’s, IMO, clunky, juvenile, repetitive and predictable. In Part 1, I had to coax myself to keep reading, just to see if it got better. The writing improves somewhat in Part 2, and the whole product - style, plot - picks up even further in Part 3. That said, it’s riddled with plot holes - really, the FBI searched Fallon’s computer and didn’t find her email to Allison? Or any of the videos? And the ending, for that reason, is incredibly frustrating. I like the premise, the idea, the twists and turns, but the author’s style and the gaping plot holes bring it down to a 6/10.
I read this in one breathless sitting. It’s my first Ruth Ware read and I’ll definitely be back for more. The character development was excellent and I love her writing style. Twists and turns til the very last.
This is the best book I’ve read in years. And I haven’t played a video or computer game in probably two decades! I was hooked within pages; I didn’t want to put it down. I was so invested in the characters’ lives; I cared about them. Zevin is a wonderful, talented storyteller. This book is everything: hopeful, heartbreaking, full of themes and ideas you’ll want to explore more. A rare 10/10 for me.
