Did not finish book. Stopped at 11%.
The constant dropping of lyrics is just too distracting for me, I am so sorry.

A super interesting read and quite thorough. I will not pretend I understood it all (the science really went over my head) but a solid read and one I’ll be thinking about for a while.

Similar to Eve by Cat Bohannon, I like the reminder that evolution is not just the past - it is actively happening all the time.

I wonder if this is a book that would benefit from reading in just one or two sittings. I was really enjoying it at first and then life slowed down my reading. By the last 30% or so, I found myself reading just to get it done, which is never a fun feeling. Still, the last couple of chapters reminded me why I was liking it so much at the start.

An easy 5 stars, and a book I’ll be recommending widely.

If you already consider yourself an abolitionist, you might not get a ton out of it, but it’s a quick and easy read so why not. And if you have questions about incarceration, why folks question its validity, what abolition even is, etc., definitely check this out.
Dylan Goes Electric!: Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties by Elijah Wald

2.5

I really enjoyed the first half (or so) of this. I love a deep dive, and it was great to learn all the context leading up to this one event. I also appreciated learning more about the impact of both Seeger and Dylan, which I hadn't thought much of, as I'm not an active fan of either one. I do think it really dragged once we were getting to the actual night of the festival. There were two or three chapters there where I just wanted us to get to where we were going. A 2.5 feels low given how much I enjoyed the first half, but I almost DNF'd multiple times in the second half, so it seems like the right rating.

I will say that if you've seen the movie, I think you'll get most of the context and background you want out of that first half.
American Bulk: Essays on Excess by Emily Mester

I enjoyed much of this, and admired how the concept of “bulk” could be interpreted in so many ways in a series of personal essays. A couple of the essays in the middle didn’t captivate me quite as much as the first few and especially the one of her trip to her grandmother’s home. There is also some really beautiful, descriptive writing in here.
