Aaah, this had so much potential, unfortunately, this is about a 3.5 stars. I think the writing and character work was exquisite but other than that, the plot and the pacing were lacking. Would still recommend for people who wish to learn more about grief or see grief in the pages.
read this for a 24 hour vlog where I read 5 translated books: https://youtu.be/lue46CvMnXM (Sant Reads on Youtube)
This was to me like Asian Pretty Little Liars but in New York. I wish I were lying because I hate-watched PLL. But there were so many scenes and tropes that were just taken from there and put into this book.
It's always difficult to rate a book that's about someone's experience - an experience that's so personal to you. So I'm not going to rate it but I am going to say that I am very glad that this short collections of essays exist.
superb depiction of mental health - specifically anxiety and depression.
The story was told in vignettes and was a little disjointed but I liked that. I liked the main character Gilda and could feel her pain and anxiety (because been there) but with the other characters, maybe not so much. The other characters were painted with such colors of black and white, there felt like there was no grey. It almost felt a little caricature-y. Though I'm not saying there aren't people like this in the world, I just wished for a little more nuance with the side characters.
