A lyrical, dark historical fiction that uncovers a dark part of US history. Events take place in both China and the US and depict the intimate story of the main character as well as the larger story of Chinese immigrants during the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It is fiction based on a mysterious truth uncovered in an archive by the author. Beautifully written and tragically executed.

I will definitely be reading the rest of this series. My first foray into Carissa Broadbent's writing and I really enjoyed it. Split POV, high stakes, and a love story wrapped up in a complex fantasy setting.

One of my favorite books of 2022. What could be called a critique of our societal obsession with shallow entertainment and the dehumanization that comes with it quickly turns into a
80s-esque slasher
